My Permanent Site Assignment - at last!
Finally, I have my site - I'll live in the capitol of Belize, Belmopan, and work with the agency, NAVCO - National Association of Village Councils Organization. The organization is relatively new, the last two PCVs helped with the infrastructure - acquiring a building, organizational structure. One of the PCV, a lawyer, set them up in coordination with the Belizean government. I'll give you more detail about the organization as I start working on the project. My main assignment deals with training the staff with administrative processes and organization, just up my alley, it's a good fit. I really wanted an urban setting by the coast - I miss my San Francisco by the sea and wanted the same here. Belmopan is in the middle of the country, flat, and spread out - a beginning of a city similar to L.A. After talking with other volunteers and PC staff, I feel better about the site assignment. I'm at the Garden City Hotel (yeah, the Tenderloin hotel, again). Tomorrow morning. I meet my counterpart from the organization who will take me to the new host family. I'll stay there for four weeks, then I find my permanent home. The swearing in happens on October 22 - a big day for all of us.

Hi Sandy and congrats on your permanent assignment! I can't wait to hear more of your stories from Belmopan. By the way, you look so fetching in your mosquito hat!
ReplyDeleteloveya,

Hi,
ReplyDeleteI can't think of a more fitting assignment for you. I KNOW you will do a fantastic job. A rural setting does have appeal, but I think the large city will provide a more "global" perspective on the country. Like Jerry, I look forward to your stories. And, yes, I love the hat. With Denge fever so prevelant...I would wear a complete mosquito net outfit! Take Care...Be Well.

Jerry finally showed my the correct way to post messages to you--I've been so impressed by your blog and love the feeling that we're with you! The boys--Alex and Aaron--played a trick on Christine this morning. They were removing the blocks from beneath her desk, and while they were there, they changed the picture on Christine's computer that she uses as a screen-saver. When Christine returned to her office, her screen-saver was a full-sized picture of YOU--with arms crossed (making sure that Christine is always doign good work)!
ReplyDeleteAs Jerry says, we miss you!

Thanks, guys, for the comments - I love hearing from you! Tell Lily, Congrats, wow, 25 years! I'm sure you all had lots of foods and a great time teasing her.
ReplyDeleteI'm here in NAVCO, my first day and lots to tell but will wait until I have free internet time to blog again.
I miss you all!
