I spent Christmas at the Peace Corps program director's home - had a lovely dinner with the family. He invited all the volunteers for an open house but I was the only who responded to the invitation, thus it turned from open house to an intimate dinner with one other guest from the US embassy. As everyone knows me, I enjoy small, intimate settings rather than a huge crowd of people.
Saturday, I hopped on the bus to San Antonio to visit with the Canto family - I created a family album on my Mac and had it mailed to Kim in the U.S. I got it in time to take it to the family. As I was riding on the bus, I was again awed with the country landscape - such richness of green hues that stretches from the flat lands to the rolling hills of the rainforest.
Riding the bus is interesting - the bus picks and drops the riders at any point on the road - there are a few designated bus stops but generally anyone can flag down the bus. During the ride, there are police check points looking for illegals. The bus goes to San Ignacio Cayo - a town of good size - where I pick up the San Antonio bus. The whole trip takes two hours plus - if one drove by car, it would take maybe forty minutes. I got there around eleven and planned to pick up the four o'clock bus back. Unfortunately, the bus owner decided to cancel that trip because business was slow. No bus on Sunday and I had to work on Monday. Don Ramon flagged a car down at the Community Center, and I rode down with a couple of people.
Today is Boxing Day - a holiday for the country. I worked a few hours with the training officer this morning. I'm dog-sitting for a PC staffer this week. Maya is a miniature dachshund - this will be interesting.
I made my first flour tortilla the other day - it turned out alright, a little misshapen and lumpy thick but eatable - not bad for a first time. I'm thinking of making papusas next time - that'll be a challenge!
Anyway, thanks for everyone who emailed me and commented on my blog - the last few weeks were tough and having contact with you all really helped me through the holidays. Hard to believe we are entering the next decade - I am excited to see what 2010 will bring both here and in the U.S. Hope everyone is well and happy - if you have time email or comment to update me on life in the big country!
Hi Sandy, Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, that's a great picture of you on top of the ruins with all that green spread out around in the background. I totally enjoy the stories of your adventures, and I feel like there's a lot to learn, like for example the bus ride and how it compares to SF MUNI system. Sometimes I think that a couple of buses are lapsing on a route because a driver decided to call in "sick" and so there just isn't a bus like on the schedule. Still, riding a bus is a lesson in patience and an opportunity to observe the world crawling along.
Yesterday evening I went walking downtown, looking at Christmas decorations and lights around Union Square and the big hotels, and everything sparkled. There were so many people clogging the sidewalks and stores, whether they were shopping or not, I don't know, but there they all were strolling along. I felt a bit claustrophobic. Your description of the countryside sounds rather peaceful, except for all the thousands, millions, billions, trillions of bugs. I must admist: I don't like bugs, but mosquitoes and bugs seem to like me.
Do take good care, may 2010 be healthy and happy, warmly, barbara
Hi Sandy, I just wanted to wish you a very happy Holiday season and a great New Year! Without a doubt, your new year will be full of adventure and new experiences. Your blog is fun to read and I love the picture you added. I enjoyed visiting the ruins so much. Interesting to hear the weather has gotten that chilly. I guess you better enjoy it before February. I didn't know it actually got hotter than when I was there in August. Yikes! Take care and write when you have time. I wish you many blessings in the coming year. Karla

Much love to you...guess who! I'll give you a hint...close to Zucchini but NOT!! ;-)
ReplyDeleteKisses!
Hi Sandy, sorry I didn't get to talk to you the other night! Ryan has taken a picture of you new grand daughter a.k.a. my big belly but hasn't sent it to you or my mom, (which she is about to kill him now :P )Everything is going well. I friend of mine who is an assistant principal for the school gave Ryan and I her $600 crib so that will save us some money on the nursery. It is an oak crib very sturdy. I wish I could show you Maxime's ultrasound of her foot and you will know immediately that she is Ryan's daughter and Ayla's little sister. (they all have the same hobbit feet)I am feeling well but getting big, I have now hit the weight of potentially being a contestant on the biggest looser. But, the good thing is that people keep telling me I look small for being 7 months and they can't believe that I only have 3 months left. Sooo that makes me happy. I guess being a big northern Caucasian, I am bound to have some weight to me. Ayla is doing well, she is very excited that me and her mom are prego. She is such a good girl, who else could do so good through some major life changes? Two weddings in a year and now two siblings in the same year as well. I'm glad it is somewhat cold here as I would be having a heat stroke. Ryan freezes at night as I am dying of heat and sleeping outside of the covers. I can't wait to come and visit next December. I hope Ryan and I have have enough vacation time saved. I hope you like your shoes. I hope you are having fun and enjoying such a beautiful place. I am jealous of you and I wish I was traveling. Well, I have to get back to work for now. I miss you and so does Ryan and Ayla. Take care and I'll write later.
ReplyDeleteLove ya,
Amy

Hi Mom It's me Valerie Kim's friend from work
ReplyDeleteThanks for the the exciting update. I have been dealing with health issues since you have been away, however I'm hanging in there. My best friend Anna was born in Belize, and came to the US when she was around 12 or so and never to return to her native country. Keep learning how to prepare the meals, my favorite dish is Panadas made with the masa. I'm so proud of you! Keep sharing your wonderful journey.
Peace & Lots of Love
O yeah Happy New Year
