After some chaotic moments in settling into my new place, I am finally feeling comfortable and believe I can live here for two years. It's a duplex owned by Peace Corps - the other side is vacant at the moment. Huge trees surround my place which gives nice shade and a cooler inside. Two trees produce huge, juicy pink grapefruit - sweet and delicious! Most of the fruit dropped and rotted on the ground. I look forward to future eating tho!
As with all buildings in Belize, my place is concrete with a zinc roof. The house was infested with termites - Peace Corps fumigated to rid the nests...but one remained in my bedroom corner. The termites' nest was fumigated but when I cut into the nest and lifted the nest, termites swarmed! I quickly rid the nest and sprayed profusely but I kept thinking of bugs crawling up my wall. Bugs, bugs, bugs...everywhere...from mosquitoes, fire ants, mites, spiders to geckos climbing up the walls. At night and in the morning I hear creepy crawlies or birds walking on the zinc roof. When it rains and it rains a lot here, the zinc roof reverberates with the rainfall like pellets banging on top of me. My kitchen has two sinks, some shelves, and a refrigerator. I bought a gas stove and a gas tank. Although I have no hot water, I do have an electric devise in the shower head that gives me warm showers - I love it!! Because the water is soft, I never feel squeaky clean but have a sticky film on my skin - the clothes feel the same. I know, I know, I'm cranky about these things...but I now realize that I'm a city person who likes the creature comforts of urban living. It's amazing how living in another country makes me appreciate the many aspects of American living.
