As I opened the boxes, the kids hardly wait
ed to get their hands on the books. I was disappointed to see that the library was not organized and in better condition. The books were mostly in mint condition or brand new. I wanted to spend ti
me with them to help organize and give them tips on how to start sorting, categorizing, etc. but we just didn't have time.
The chairlady asked again for help - since I was involved with the Belmopan Library Committee and the librarian indicated that she was more than willing to help the village, I told the chairlady that I would make the connection for her. As it turned out, the Belmopan Librarian found a main librarian assigned specifically to help villages with libraries.
In the meantime, I continue to work on the Belmopan Library Committee - the librarian submitted a proposal for a grant in June to improve the library: an expansion of the building for a children's section, air conditioning which would totally improve the usage, and computers to allow access for children and adults to the internet and research. The quality of the books are in poor condition and limited - hopefully, the next shipment from Bob and Kim will go to this library. Desperately, the library needs good resource books, adult learning books, and young adult reading. No news on the grant as yet, we plan to put together a program for children who need help in reading and learning and are behind in their class - there is a Peace Corps Volunteer grant I hope to apply - it's a small grant but any monies will help the library.
